Ready to Live the Full Life?

Alpine Shop and 4 Hands Brewing Company are proud to introduce you to Full Life Lager. Created as a collaboration between the two local St. Louis companies, Full Life is brewed to help promote outdoor adventure… adventure that will allow you to bring Full Life along for the ride.

If you’re in the St. Louis area, you might run into one of 12 different displays across the city helping to show off just how you can live the Full Life. And if you find one of those displays, you may just end up winning a prize package from Alpine Shop and 4 Hands.

And if you’re coming to our Swap at our Kirkwood location this weekend (April 26-28), you might just get a taste of the Full Life, yourself! 4 Hands will be “on hand” with samples throughout the weekend, including Friday Night’s First Choice celebration.

Swap Used Gear Sales Start Tomorrow Night!

Swap Begins Friday Night
Join us for the 26th Annual Spring Swap – used bikes, boats, camping gear, skis, snowboards, apparel… basically anything you need to get outside at fantastic prices!

At 6 pm on Friday, April 26, our 26th Annual Spring Swap kicks off at our Kirkwood location with a tent full of used bikes, boats, skis, snowboards, camping gear, footwear and apparel. (Plus, we have racks and racks of Alpine Shop’s clearance gear in there, too, all at 20% off the already marked-down price.)

There is a $5 entry fee for Friday Night’s First Choice (at the Kirkwood location only) with all proceeds going to Saint Louis BikeWorks, a terrific local organization dedicated to helping kids earn their own bikes by learning how to work on and repair used bikes.

If you’re in the Columbia, Mo., area, our store right in the middle of downtown will also have Swap used goods available for sale starting at 6 pm.

Sales continue during normal store hours on Saturday and Sunday at both locations. Even if only our Kirkwood and Columbia locations have Swap events, all Alpine Shop stores, including The Pathfinder in Manhattan, Kan., have fantastic sales going on now on Featured New Products through Sunday as well.

Award Season: Alpine Shop Nominated for St. Louis’ A-List

Alpine Shop has been honored to win St. Louis Magazine’s A-List Award numerous times over the past 10 years. For 2019, we’ve been nominated in three different categories: Activewear, Bike Store and Outdoor/Camping Store. While we’ve won an A-List before, this is the first time we’ve been nominated in multiple categories!

At Alpine Shop, we believe that simply exploring the wild places that surround us transforms our lives for the better.

That belief formed our vision as a company: “Generations Transformed by Discovery Outdoors.” Those five words have driven Alpine Shop to dedicate itself over the past 45 years to the idea that getting people outside brings about positive physical, emotional and spiritual changes in them. And we like to think we’re doing a pretty good job of it.

If you’re one of the hundreds who have helped us clean up our area rivers and parks, or worked with us to build new trails throughout our region, you’ve experienced it firsthand.

If you’re one of the 17,000+ people who have participated in one of our clinics, competitions, events, or instructional classes over the past five years, or if you’re one of the millions we’ve outfitted for your own adventures in that same time, we hope you would agree, as well.

On-line voting ends this Friday, April 19 and is free for anyone to participate. If we’ve made your A-List, we’d appreciate it if you would let the rest of St. Louis know this as well! We’re told that voting is extremely close this year across almost all categories. We’d love to have your vote.

If, for some reason, you think we haven’t earned your vote, we’d really like to know that, as well, and anything we could do to make things better. Please let us know by sending an email to customercare (at) alpineshop.com. Thank you!

No Joke. Alpine Shop Purchased 41 years Ago on April 1, 1978

One of the original signs from Mooers Alpine, Alpine Shop’s predecessor.

In 1973, a local St. Louis climber and Army Map Service employee, Bob Mooers, author of “Finding Your Way in the Outdoors” (still available used at Alibris, 99¢ and up), convinced Chouinard Equipment to open him as a dealer. So Bob started a climbing shop – in a small room upstairs from the home winemaking shop he was moonlighting on the side. It took one month for climbing to outsell winemaking, which was then abandoned in a move to a new, larger space.

Five years later, “Mooers Alpine” was thriving, but Mooers was looking to sell and move to the Northwest.

A 45-year-old customer of his from that exact same area of the country had come to St. Louis to work in the city’s banking and finance industry. A change-in-leadership at the company he worked for had soured Russell “Holly” Hollenbeck on that field though, and he considered himself a “fugitive” from corporate life. While skiing at Snowbird in Utah during the winter of 1977, Hollenbeck broached the subject of purchasing Mooers Alpine with his family. On April 1, 1978, “Mooers Alpine” became “Alpine Shop” with Hollenbeck as the new owner.

The original hand-carved sign from the first “Alpine Shop” after Hollenbeck purchased the store from Bob Mooers still hangs behind the counter at our now 18,000 square foot flagship store in St. Louis.

41 years later, climbing is still at our core, but over the years we have added gear, clothing, events and clinics for almost every type of outdoor enthusiast, from backpackers, hikers, campers, paddlers, and cyclists, to snowboarders and skiers, at four locations in Missouri and Kansas.

Alpine Shop Kirkwood’s collection of historic climbing gear, cleared from big walls in Yosemite National Park by friend-of-the-Shop Rich Copeland. Copeland died in a fall in Yosemite in 2014 and the outpouring of tributes was truly amazing.

Chouinard Equipment morphed into Great Pacific Iron Works which went on to become Black Diamond and Patagonia. Our first supplier remains our largest and one of our most admired.

After 45 years in the business, it is Alpine Shop’s Vision to see Generations Transformed by Discovery Outdoors.

More than 400 Runners Celebrate Spring at The North Face Shaw Bloom Trail 10k/20k

2019 The North Face Shaw Bloom Trail 10k winner Sam Aufmuth ran away from the field, literally. His closest competitor was more than five minutes behind him over the 6.2 mile course

GREY SUMMIT, Mo. – Officially, spring began last week. For the 403 runners who participated in the 2019 The North Face Shaw Bloom Trail 10k/20k on Saturday, March 23, spring definitely arrived with absolutely pristine conditions for a trail run at the Shaw Nature Reserve just west of St. Louis.

Sam Aufmuth of Washington, Mo., blitzed the field in the 10k, opening up a wide lead within the first mile of the new course and expanding that lead to more than five full minutes, finishing in 39:38.9. He was followed to the finish line by Kyle Steele (Rolla, Mo. – 44:37.2) and Adam Wurr (St. Louis, Mo. – 44:59.3).

In the women’s 10k field, Karli Green of St. Louis took home the win with a final time of 50:23.8. Megan Berg (St. Charles, Mo. – 51:03.4) and Rachel Mlsna (Oconomowoc, Wis. – 52:27.1) rounded out the top three.

For the 20k field, Ryan Winter of St. Louis was the overall winner in a time of 1:29.35.3. Ankur Patel (St. Louis – 1:32:03.8) and Jason Buck (Imperial, Mo. – 1:33.29.2) finished out the top three.

On the women’s side in the 20k, Shanna Brinker of Washington, Mo., took home top honors in the race with a time of 1:44:08.4. Courtney Sweetin (Brentwood, Mo. – 1:46:24.8) and Juliah Grunloh (St. Louis – 1:49:56.9) took home second and third, respectively.

Full results are available below. For more information on the race, including the course, past results and the Shaw Nature Reserve, please visit the Off-Road Racing League site.
