Alpine Shop Named Finalist for Outdoor Retailer Inspiration Award

For the second straight month, Alpine Shop has been named one of three finalists in a national retailer of the year award.

In April, the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance, a community of independent outdoor specialty retailers that Alpine Shop has been a member of since 2002, named Alpine Shop as a finalist for their National Outdoor Retailer of the Year Award.

On May 22, Alpine Shop learned that Outdoor Retailer, the largest U.S. tradeshow and business event for the outdoor industry, selected the shop as one of three finalists for the 2019 Inspiration Award in the Retail division.

The Outdoor Retailer Inspiration Awards presented by adidas Outdoor celebrate champions of the outdoor community who inspire and encourage others to enjoy, participate in and support outdoor recreation. Annual awards are presented to individuals, organizations and companies, and recipients are honored at a live celebration during Summer Market.

The 2019 Outdoor Retailer Inspiration Awards will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, on the first night of Summer Market in Denver.

No stranger to awards during the shop’s 45-year-history Alpine Shop previously won the 2012 SNEWS/Backpacker Magazine National Outdoor Retailer of the Year Award for Growth in Outdoor Sports, and has one numerous “Best of” awards in St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri.

Alpine Shop Featured in May 2019 Outdoor Insight Magazine

Alpine Shop was featured in the May 2019 issue of Outdoor Insight Magazine as one of the “Great 8: Outdoor Retailers Who Use Special Events to Take their Business to Another Level.”

“As retail origin stories go, St. Louis-based Alpine Shop definitely has a good one. And its evolution into a standout retailer with four locations – thanks in part to a thriving event business – is pretty impressive, too.”

Master the MR340

So you signed up for longest contiguous paddle race in the country – the MR340 – now what do you do? The experts at Alpine Shop are here to help!

A significant number of Alpine Shop employees have participated in the MR340, and many have done the race multiple times. Together, they’re helping to bring their knowledge to you as part of our MR340 Introduction Clinics going on this spring and summer.

Your head instructor for these classes is an 11-time competitor, and has earned three trophies from the race that he won’t stop bragging about.

There will be three MR340 clinics.

Clinic #1 – May 7th – 6:30pm : Intro to MR340 Q&A – Location : Alpine Shop – Kirkwood MO

We’ll review charts, navigation, support teams, best practices, horror stories, and gear.  Bring your questions!

Clinic #2 – May 26th – 3pm : Forward Strokes – Location: Simpson Lake

Let’s be blunt, just about anyone can get into a kayak and figure out that paddling on the right turns the boat left, paddling on the left makes the boat go right, and paddling on both sides SOMETIMES makes the boat go straight. It often takes YEARS to develop an efficient forward stroke, but we’ll try to speed up the process.  It takes about 250,000 paddles strokes to get to St Charles from KC, try to imagine how just a small improvement in efficiency can help you out.

Clinic #3 – June 25th – 6:30pm : Safety & Rescue – Location: Simpson Lake

If you tip your kayak on most rivers in Missouri, you can just stand up and walk to shore. That’s not the case on the Mighty MO! Every year, a few MR340 racers end up in the river. Attend this class to learn how to rescue yourself and others in a safe, controlled setting so you’ll be more prepared when there’s a problem during the race (when you’re fatigued and disoriented).

Each class lasts approximately 90 minutes and is $10.

Bike Month & Bike to Work Day

Friday, May 17 is National Bike to Work Day and the whole month of May is National Bike Month.

So how can you participate? Well, if you’re an experienced rider, just jump on your bike and ride! Pretty simple, right? And if you can ride to work on National Bike to Work Day, even better!

But what if you’re not such an experienced rider? What do you need if you’re interested in starting to commute by bike? Well, here are a few tips that we hope might make the experience more fun than you expected.

  1. If you don’t have a bike already, well, you might be surprised to find out that is a requirement. But, you’re also in luck, because we have some of the best commuter bikes you’ve ever seen. The Specialized Turbo Vado and Turbo Como E-Bikes take a lot of the stress out of commuting. The pedal-assisted system is just like riding a bike – only a lot faster and a lot easier.

Now, some people might say that an E-Bike would be cheating for National Bike to Work Day. We couldn’t disagree more. The simple truth is riding an e-bike still means you’re going to be pedaling – the bike doesn’t move unless you’re being active. And as far as we’re concerned, as long as you’re being active and you’re not adding another car to the roadways, you’re staying true to the purpose of the day.
  2. Plan your route ahead of time. The route you drive to work may not be the safest for you to ride your bike on. Look for streets with dedicated bike paths or at least a wide-enough, and safe-enough shoulder that leave you room to maneuver in the face of other vehicles.
  3. You’re probably going to want a bag to bring a change of clothes. There are plenty of options. Or you can just grab an old backpack and see how it goes!
  4. Be safe. Wear a helmet. Make sure your bike is in good working condition. Obey all traffic laws and make sure you signal your turns!
